Philip Glass: «Funeral of Amenhotep III» from Akhnaten (1987) HQ
Опубликовано: 1 дек. 2015 г.If I had to list the masterpieces composed and recorded by Philip Glass, this one would certainly be one of them. If «It was Always You, Helen» was one of Glass's most beautiful and haunting compositions, «Funeral» is doubtlessly his most stirring, along with «The Photographer.» I will not belabor my description by discussing the opera from which it comes as my video does not follow its plot. My focus in the video primarily is partly impressionistic, partly historic, and partly dedicatory. Without question «Funeral of Amenhotep III» is a funeral march worthy of a great king and the mourning for the age that dies with him.

Satyagraha — World Premiere;
Stadsschouwburg, Rotterdam, The Netherlands;
September 5, 1980. Very good Dutch Radio broadcast.
Satyagraha (”insistence on truth”) is a 1979 opera in three acts for orchestra, chorus and soloists, composed by Philip Glass, with a libretto by Glass and Constance DeJong. Loosely based on the life of Mohandas K. Gandhi, it forms the second part of Glass’s “Portrait Trilogy” of operas about men who changed the world, which also includes Einstein On The Beach and Akhnaten. The title refers to Gandhi’s concept of non-violent resistance to injustice, Satyagraha, and the text, from the Bhagavad Gita, is sung in the original Sanskrit. [The opera is semi-narrative in form and deals with Mahatma Gandhi’s early years in South Africa and his development of non-violent protest into a political tool.]
Satyagraha was commissioned by the city of Rotterdam, Netherlands, and first performed at the Stadsschouwburg (Municipal Theatre) there on September 5, 1980, by the Netherlands Opera and the Utrecht Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Bruce Ferden. — wikipedia
In Satyagraha, Glass is confident he has an enduring hit, People magazine reported. “We’ve had 70 years of pieces since Schoenberg that no one understands,” he argues, “so there’s nothing really wrong, is there, with a little contemporary music being appealing?”

This panel discussion seeks to provide context both to MOCAD's music programming for the evening of July 1, 2011 with Hunting Lodge, Lichens and Michael Dec, as well as a broader understanding of the history and context of the music that today's culture has deemed «noise.» From Luigi Russolo and the Futurists to John Cage, Anthony Braxton and Lou Reed, and from Les Rallizes Dénudés and the Boredoms to Animal Collective and Wolf Eyes, the history of «music» presented as sound and art has been long and well documented. To a large group of forward thinking artisans the terms music, noise and art are non-exclusive.
This discussion includes artist and musician Davin Brainard from the long running performance art/noise music group Princess Dragon Mom and the art collective/record label TIME STEREO; Cary Loren of highly influential Michigan-based proto-noise band Destroy All Monsters; artist Alivia Zivich who runs the influential noise label AA records and performs as part of the noise ensemble Demons; artist and musician Chip Flynn of the robotic art collective Apetechnology; and Detroit promoter and DJ Greg Baise. This loose conversation and information session is led by Detroit artist and MOCAD Public Program Coordinator Ben Hernandez whose venue Detroit Art Space acted as a hub for the Detroit «noise scene» from 2003-2005. There is also a live presentation of a Luigi Russolo noise machine created and installed by Apetechnology.
