Philip Glass, Bryce Dessner & Einaudi Define Contemporary Classical Music

Philip Glass, Bryce Dessner & Einaudi Define Contemporary Classical Music

With Mary Anne Hobbes championing Nils Frahm and A Winged Victory For The Sullen and Hauschka performing live orchestral performances with Icelandic experimental outfit mum on Boiler Room, Contemporary Classical (or Neo-Classical) music is gradually, gently moving into a position where songs titled 'Steep Hills Of Vicodin Tears' wouldn't sound amiss on prime time radio slots.

Philip Glass - 1980 Satyagraha

Philip Glass — 1980 Satyagraha

Satyagraha — World Premiere;
Stadsschouwburg, Rotterdam, The Netherlands;
September 5, 1980. Very good Dutch Radio broadcast.

Satyagraha (”insistence on truth”) is a 1979 opera in three acts for orchestra, chorus and soloists, composed by Philip Glass, with a libretto by Glass and Constance DeJong. Loosely based on the life of Mohandas K. Gandhi, it forms the second part of Glass’s “Portrait Trilogy” of operas about men who changed the world, which also includes Einstein On The Beach and Akhnaten. The title refers to Gandhi’s concept of non-violent resistance to injustice, Satyagraha, and the text, from the Bhagavad Gita, is sung in the original Sanskrit. [The opera is semi-narrative in form and deals with Mahatma Gandhi’s early years in South Africa and his development of non-violent protest into a political tool.]

Satyagraha was commissioned by the city of Rotterdam, Netherlands, and first performed at the Stadsschouwburg (Municipal Theatre) there on September 5, 1980, by the Netherlands Opera and the Utrecht Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Bruce Ferden. — wikipedia

In Satyagraha, Glass is confident he has an enduring hit, People magazine reported. “We’ve had 70 years of pieces since Schoenberg that no one understands,” he argues, “so there’s nothing really wrong, is there, with a little contemporary music being appealing?”

Over the last fifteen years, Philip Glass has defined a new form of biographical opera. There was never any doubt that he would be the ideal composer for Mishima, a mosaic film biography. I wanted a score which would unite the film's disparate elements and propel it forward. Such a score, by definition, would be a distinct, cohesive composition.

I only wondered how to induce Glass. Money was out of the question: the film was already an egregiously under-budgeted labor of love production. I opted for a soft sell. (I've subsequently learned how remarkably resistant Philip is to a hard one.) I simply gave him the script and all the materials by and about Mishima at my disposal.

Philip responded enthusiastically and after several pre-production meetings and a trip to the Tokyo locations, wrote a score from the script as he would from a libretto. With Kurt Munkacsi and Michael Riesman he recorded a temp synthesizer version.

I edited the film to this temp score, altering it as necessary: cutting, expanding and repeating cues. I then played the edited film and score for Philip. He rewrote the music to fit the film's now-precise specifications and recorded it with a full orchestra. Later, he supervised last-minute changes during the final mix.

In keeping with the original concept, Glass has re-edited the score as a distinct musical entity. His Mishima equally serves the film and stands alone.

— Paul Schrader
