Black Sun Empire represents the finest in dark and tech fuelled dance-floor drum & bass. Since bursting onto the scene back in 2000, they've continued to develop their own unique style and sound, releasing numerous singles as well as five full-length LPs and establishing themselves as leaders in the field. With their impressive DJ skills and inspirational productions, Black Sun Empire has reached far beyond their native Holland. They've toured around the world, with highlights including Glastonbury and numerous other festival appearances, and continue to build on their growing reputation as some of the most exciting and consistent performers in the scene.

From their base in Utrecht, Holland, the Black Sun Empire trio have truly gone global, taking their own brand of high-octane techno-infused drum & bass to audiences worldwide, with over 100 appearances at live stages and clubs in the last year alone.

Their own club night, Blackout, celebrated it's ninth year anniversary in February 2012 and has seen guest appearances from some of the very best artists in drum & bass and dubstep including Goldie, Dom & Roland, Klute, Optical, Spor, Nero, and Bar 9. In 2011 and now onto 2012, Blackout goes on tour with guests and related artists from their three labels (BSE Recordings, oBSEsessions, Shadows of the Empire) and now has a highly successful residency in London at Cable.

Note: «My Festival» is a project organized by Patti Smith and Marco Tirelli to celebrate the 10th year of life of Auditorium, Parco della Musica in Rome. During this festival, from 9th to 25th April, Patti Smith remember her own life, through her friendships and music, with the exhibit 'Memories' minded by Marco Tirelli. The Festival has seen the participation of a lot of great artists, as the director Bernardo Bertolucci and the musician Nicola Piovani. During this night, Patti wants to remember her friend Allen Ginsberg through a reading of his best poems and the musical partnership of Philip Glass on piano.
Why did Patti Smith choose this collaboration with Glass to give her personal tribute to the Master of Beat Generation? «I knew Philip» Patti said «in 1978, together with Ginsberg and Burroughs. When my husband died in 1994, we made a charity event with both of them. And then, when Allen died in 1997, we began to work together, because we missed him so much. April is the perfect month to remember Allen, because he died on 5th». Patti Smith is able to create a fantastic atmosphere with a passional and strong reading while on the back some photos of Ginsberg flow; when she comes on the stage, she turns towards the screen saying hello to his friend Allen.
Patti Smith mingles the reading of Ginsberg's poems with the Glass's execution of his best works and her great songs of her long and glorious career, with a special end that sees on the stage Patti Smith, Lenny Kaye, Jessie Smith (Patti's daughter) and Philip Glass playing the same piano while all people are dancing and singing under the stage on the fantastic notes of «People Have the Power».

The quartet for ropes, interpreted by Kronos Quartet, is nowadays still played, independently of the soundtrack. He is entitled String quartet No. 3 Mishima.

Over the last fifteen years, Philip Glass has defined a new form of biographical opera. There was never any doubt that he would be the ideal composer for Mishima, a mosaic film biography. I wanted a score which would unite the film's disparate elements and propel it forward. Such a score, by definition, would be a distinct, cohesive composition.

I only wondered how to induce Glass. Money was out of the question: the film was already an egregiously under-budgeted labor of love production. I opted for a soft sell. (I've subsequently learned how remarkably resistant Philip is to a hard one.) I simply gave him the script and all the materials by and about Mishima at my disposal.

Philip responded enthusiastically and after several pre-production meetings and a trip to the Tokyo locations, wrote a score from the script as he would from a libretto. With Kurt Munkacsi and Michael Riesman he recorded a temp synthesizer version.

I edited the film to this temp score, altering it as necessary: cutting, expanding and repeating cues. I then played the edited film and score for Philip. He rewrote the music to fit the film's now-precise specifications and recorded it with a full orchestra. Later, he supervised last-minute changes during the final mix.

In keeping with the original concept, Glass has re-edited the score as a distinct musical entity. His Mishima equally serves the film and stands alone.
